1. General Description
Caustic soda is used to control pH in water-base fluids.
2. Application
Caustic soda is used to maintain the proper drilling fluid pH. This provides the alkaline
environment necessary for the correct degree of dispersion of clays and the full ionisation
and solubility of dispersants (such as lignosulphonates and lignins) and of some
polymers. Maintaining a high pH also aids corrosion control and reduces contamination
by calcium or magnesium, which are precipitated as hydroxides.
